Automotive Market Challenges
Understanding the Imperatives
Producing a single vehicle may require up to 151m3 of water (source: WaterWorld). Vehicle manufacturing is also energy intensive, and generates large volumes of waste.
Veolia understands the sustainability challenges experienced in the automotive industry, and shares the commitment to reduce carbon emissions. Another concern facing vehicle manufacturers is the ability to predict shortages of raw materials - thus the importance of meeting recycling targets and the drive towards creating a circular economy (like ZLD in the water cycle, for instance).
Veolia’s solutions for the Automotive Industry
Veolia’s solutions for the automotive industry are centered around addressing these known challenges: developing greener manufacturing with better cost control. Globally, Veolia, as a multi-site facility management partner, has reduced the environmental footprint of several production sites, delivering solutions across water, waste and energy, including:
- Optimizing the complete water cycle through operation and maintenance of all utilities
- Energy audits aimed at reducing energy usage
- Waste recovery & recycling

🇿🇦 South Africa | On-Site Water Solutions for Toyota
At Toyota South Africa, we implemented a third-stage Reverse Osmosis (RO) module that increased water recovery from 75% to 85%. This smart upgrade significantly reduced their water footprint — helping the client save resources, lower costs, and advance their sustainability goals.
🇲🇦 Morocco | The first "zero carbon" Automotive plant in the world
We partnered with Renault in Tangier to deliver the world’s first "zero carbon" plant with zero industrial liquid discharge. By combining biomass energy recovery and advanced water recycling, we reduced thermal energy use by 35% and cut water consumption by 70%, helping Renault turn environmental ambition into operational excellence.
🇵🇱 Poland | Volkswagen Poznan : Turning Waste Heat into Clean Energy for the City
We partnered with Volkswagen Poznań to recover waste heat from their foundry operations and supply it to the local district heating network. This innovative system now provides zero-emission heat to 45 residential buildings, reduces CO₂ emissions by 2,440 tonnes per year, and saves 17 million liters of water—boosting both environmental impact and operational efficiency.
🇰🇷 Korea | Hyundai Powertech : Driving Zero Liquid Discharge ZLD with Efficiency
We operate Hyundai Powertech’s large-scale ZLD facility in South Korea, reusing 3,000 m³ of wastewater per day for process water. Through smart upgrades and process optimization, we’ve cut operating costs by 7% annually while ensuring stable water quality and improved environmental performance in automotive manufacturing.
