Energy Solutions in Africa

Meeting the energy needs of African industries and cities with local, efficient and sustainable solutions
Energy Africa employee

Africa accounts for just 6% of global energy use and less than 3% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions, despite being home to nearly 18% of the world's population.

The continent faces critical energy infrastructure challenges, including: high transmission and distribution losses (19-24% in East African countries), frequent power outages, with manufacturing sectors losing power on average 56 days per year and the growing energy needs due to rapid urbanization.

Outdated infrastructure leads to major energy losses and higher consumption rates. Investing in energy efficiency and local energy solutions is not only crucial for Africa's growth but also for global ecological transformation.

🇲🇦 Morocco: Biomass powering a zero carbon automotive plant

At Renault's Tangier factory, Veolia helped achieve "zero carbon" emissions by using olive pomace biomass to power three boilers—equivalent to the energy needs of a small town. This initiative prevents 135,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

🇨🇮 Côte d’Ivoire: Converting Waste to Energy

In Akouédo, we transformed a former landfill into an urban park and a clean energy source. By recovering biogas electricity, we will avoid nearly 80,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year over the next 10 years.

🇲🇦 Morocco: Driving energy efficiency in the healthcare sector

Since October 2023, Veolia has been improving energy efficiency and providing multi-technical maintenance services at the Casablanca Private Hospital, part of the AKDITAL Group, which operates 22 healthcare facilities across 10 cities. Services include maintenance of air conditioning, heating, ventilation, electrical systems, and plumbing—optimizing energy performance for critical healthcare infrastructures.
