Food & beverage Market Challenges
Understanding the Imperatives
Food and Beverage processing faces particular environmental challenges:
High energy consumption due to the production and processing contributing to greenhouse gas emissions;
High water consumption with water being used for processing, cleaning and other operations, on a continent facing water scarcity;
Generation of significant amounts of waste, including packaging materials, organic waste and byproducts. Proper waste management is crucial to minimize environmental impact. This is combined with strict hygiene and food security requirements are usually based on strict regulations.

🇿🇦 South Africa | Woodlands Dairy: Reducing Municipal Load Through Resource Recovery
In response to increasing wastewater production and limited municipal treatment capacity, Veolia implemented an Anaerobic Resource Recovery Facility at Woodlands Dairy in Humansdorp. The facility processes 1,500 m³ of effluent daily, generating biogas for steam production and recycling 60% of wastewater, reducing municipal water demand by 44%.
🇿🇦 South Africa | Distell: Transforming Effluent into Renewable Energy
To tackle fluctuating wastewater loads and rising treatment costs, Veolia installed a Biobulk® Anaerobic Reactor at Distell’s Adam Tas plant in Stellenbosch. The facility treats 1,000 m³ of effluent per day, converting 94% of COD into biogas, which is then used to produce steam, cutting operational costs and advancing Distell’s green agenda.
